Following a convincing defeat to Scotland in Cardiff, it could have been worse three days later as Wales found themsleves 4-0 down at half time against the Croatians with Graz half-marathon victims, Huw Roffe, Owen Williams and Greg Spencer on their last legs a day after running in Austria.
The gane had been kicked off by the mayor of Zagreb and was being played at the Croatian Centre of Excellence in Zagreb. Joe Ham, Adam Hurley, Tom Ham and Shelley Childs made their international debuts in the one-sided first half. However half time saw three Canadians plunged into the heat of the battle after qualifying on the train journey rule after chatting to Welsh fans on the train from Slovenia to Zagreb the day before.
Adam Soil had never seen a "soccer" match but could play in goal as he had been a former Ice Hockey keeper! He pulled off a superb double save from a penalty taken by a Croatian First Division player and gave Wales inspiration to score twice to make the final score a respectable 6-2, that man Will Johnson scoring again a day after finishing in the top 100 at the Graz Marathon. Huw Williams also scored his first, and probably last, international goal from the penalty spot to complete an amazing game.
It was also probably the last international for father and son, Tim and Rhys Hartley, with Tim rumoured to be ready to retire from international football at the ripe old age of 55.
